Job Overview
This position is designed with career growth in mind, with the expectation that the Assistant Nursery Manager will develop into the Nursery Manager role within 2-3 years .
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in managing and coordinating all aspects of nursery operations to ensure efficiency and profitability.
- Oversee plant purchasing, including sourcing woody and herbaceous plants for Garden Care and Installation projects.
- Manage logistics for plant pick-ups and deliveries, ensuring timely fulfillment of project needs.
- Work closely with the purchasing team and other departments to align plant procurement with project schedules.
- Collaborate with the Installation and Construction teams to establish realistic company guidelines regarding plant availability.
- Continuously review and improve nursery department procedures, methods, and best practices.
- Monitor team compliance with established procedures and company-wide safety standards, including leading Safety Tailgate Talks .
- Assist in hiring, training, and mentoring nursery staff, supporting their professional growth.
- Work with the Nursery Manager to track and manage nursery inventory, ensuring optimal stock levels.
- Maintain oversight of nursery facility maintenance , ensuring safety and operational effectiveness.
- Assist in fleet management , including new purchases, leasing, scheduling preventative maintenance, and tracking equipment usage.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience considered.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in nursery management, plant purchasing, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience managing subordinate co-workers .
- Strong horticultural knowledge, particularly regarding Midwest plant species .
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to read and interpret landscape design plans .
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn/master Aspire software for purchasing, inventory management, and job cost review.
- Knowledge of budgeting, cost estimating, and fiscal management principles.
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to adapt to changing priorities .
- Ability to foster a collaborative and productive work environment .
Certifications & Requirements
- Valid driver’s license
- Licensed pesticide applicator preferred.
Working Conditions
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions , including extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and loud noises.
- Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs , stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
- Flexibility with work hours, including weekends and extended hours as needed .
- Moderate physical activity required, including operating nursery-related equipment such as dump trucks, compact loaders, track loaders, wheel loaders, and various truck/trailer combinations .
