Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) invites applications for a Writer Summer Intern to join our Strategy and Communications department. This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week, internship opportunity based out of our regional office located in Washington D.C. with a hybrid work model . This internship position requires the intern to be onsite every Tuesday at our Capitol Hill regional office. Please note, this position is ineligible for benefits. Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group is comprised of more than 1,700 Permanente physicians and nearly 300 staff professionals who come together to make a positive impact on the health and lives of more than 800,000 members in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Reporting to a Senior Communications Consultant, the Writer Summer Intern will collaborate with experienced communications professionals, physician experts, and spokespeople to develop content for our podcast, external websites, internal newsletters, and other public relations initiatives. This internship offers hands-on experience in healthcare communications, content creation, and media relations, with opportunities to contribute to high-visibility projects that make an impact.

You can expect to:

  • Healthier You Podcast: Write scripts and talking points for our Healthier You Podcast, which has nearly 1 million views. Research healthcare topics, develop talking points, and draft episode descriptions and summaries for the podcast website.
  • News Briefs: Create news briefs that highlight physician achievements and community events, boosting SEO and driving traffic to kp.org/doctor. (Example: A piece on Dr. Ariel Cohen led to a 500% traffic spike to his page.)
  • Blog Drafting: Draft blogs under the guidance of our Senior Writer. Each blog is crafted to engage readers and drive thousands of views.
  • Physician Homepages Optimization: Support the rollout of newly designed physician homepages on kp.org/doctor . Collaborate with physicians to enhance their profiles and optimize them for search engine visibility.
  • Video Web Summaries: Write concise web summaries and tag marketing videos, posting them on the website to enhance user engagement and visibility.

What is required:

  • Must be a current student enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or a related field; Recent college graduates are ineligible for the internship program
  • Must be available to work full-time, 40 hours a week, for a minimum of 12 weeks
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to produce clear, compelling, and informative content is required
  • Experience with design, photography, or video editing is preferred
  • Excellent research skills and the ability to stay informed on trending healthcare topics
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational and time management skills, able to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively within a team
  • Must be able to commute to the Washington D.C. regional office one day per week
  • Must be able to travel to the Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers for offsite projects as needed
  • Candidates must either currently live in or be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C. metropolitan area
  • Must provide documentation of the Covid vaccine 2-dose series (or J&J 1-dose) prior to October 1, 2023, or documentation for 1-dose of the most current Covid vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as a condition of employment. Must provide documentation for the influenza vaccine as a condition of employment

The starting hourly rate for this position ranges from $20.00 to $25.00, which considers an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and prior job experience, training, market data, and other relevant factors. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
