Job Summary: The Manufacturing Welding Engineer is responsible for developing, qualifying, and optimizing welding processes for spiral welded wind tower manufacturing. This role ensures alignment with AWS D1.1, ISO 9001, and specific customer requirements. Serving as a key link between engineering and operations, the Welding Engineer drives efficiency, quality, and consistency in weld performance throughout the production process.

Job Duties:

  • Develop, document, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualification Records (WPQR) for SAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, and automated welding processes.
  • Lead welding trials and optimize parameters using Lincoln Power Wave AC/DC 1000 systems; analyze waveform data to improve arc stability, heat input control, and deposition rates.
  • Troubleshoot welding defects such as porosity, incomplete fusion, and arc-strike variations using structured root cause analysis tools (8D, 5-Why).
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to design and implement fixtures, manipulators, and robotic welding cells, including support for new product launches and mobile/on-site manufacturing initiatives.
  • Work with Quality teams to resolve nonconformances, validate repair procedures, and ensure compliance with AWS D1.1 and customer-specific requirements in inspection and testing plans.
  • Train and certify welders; manage welder qualification and continuity records and oversee performance testing.
  • Provide welding expertise during design reviews by advising on weld joint design, weld symbols, and overall manufacturability.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on increasing throughput, reducing cost, and improving first-pass yield through Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Maintain specifications for welding consumables and assist the Supply Chain team with vendor selection, qualification, and performance evaluation.
  • Monitor advancements in welding standards, technologies, and industry trends; recommend upgrades to equipment or processes as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in heavy steel fabrication, preferably involving SAW and large-diameter pipe or tower welding required.
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS D1.1 and experience preparing and qualifying welding procedures required.
  • Proficiency with advanced welding equipment and waveform control systems (e.g., Lincoln Power Wave); ability to interpret waveform data and logs required.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and optimize automated welding processes required.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management systems and APQP methodologies required.
  • Competence in CAD (SolidWorks or Inventor) and interpreting complex fabrication drawings required.
  • AWS CWI, CWE, or SCWI certification.
  • Experience working with GE Vernova or other wind-tower OEM specifications (e.g., Vestas).
  • Exposure to advanced inspection systems (e.g., photogrammetry) and statistical process control.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification.
  • Experience with ERP and PLM systems (e.g., Omega, Intelex, SAP).
  • Strong shop-floor presence with a hands-on approach and ability to lead through influence.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and technical documentation skills.
  • Highly organized and self-directed, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and lift-up to 50 lbs. in a production setting.
  • Up to 15%, including vendor visits and travel to in-field factory sites.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
